Serbia ordered its army to advance towards Kosovo

Belgrade: Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has put the army on full combat alert while ordering troops to advance near the border with Kosovo.

According to international media reports, the decision by the President of Serbia came amid clashes between protesters and the police in Zvicin, a predominantly Serbian town in neighboring Kosovo.

Serbian Defense Minister Milos Vučević said in a live TV broadcast that an immediate military movement has been ordered on the border with Kosovo because it is clear that terrorism against the Serb community in Kosovo is taking place.

It should be noted that the protests against the newly elected Albanian mayor in Zvicin, a town with a majority of Serbian citizens, are ongoing. The protesters were blocking the mayor from entering his office after the elections, which they had boycotted. Police fired tear gas at the protesters to disperse the crowd from in front of the municipality building.

About 50,000 Serbs living in four northern Kosovo municipalities, including Zvicin, boycotted the April 23 vote in protest that their demands for more autonomy had not been met.
