Turkey: Singer banned for telling jokes about religion


Istanbul: Turkish pop singer Gulsan Berktar has been banned for 10 months for telling an infamous joke about religious schools.

The Associated Press (AP) quoted the Turkish state news agency as saying that a court in Istanbul has banned Turkish pop singer Gilsan from performing and performing for 10 months for mocking religious schools in Turkey.

The 46-year-old singer was briefly jailed last year for the joke. Later, he was again sent to jail for five days followed by 15 days of house arrest.

The court initially sentenced Gilson to one year in prison for the aforementioned crime, but the sentence was later reduced after the singer’s apology and non-repetition during the trial.
