A study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders examined the dietary habits of more than 14,000 people aged 35 to 74 from Brazil.

Questionnaires were filled out by these people to find out whether they like to eat meat or stick to vegetables only.

People were then assessed for depression using a tool called the Clinical Interview Schedule Revised (CISR).

Researchers found that vegetarians were twice as likely to develop depression as meat eaters.

The researchers could not determine the reason for this, but they said that the lack of various elements in the body, such as those found in meat, could be a possible reason.

Meat contains nutrients such as protein, iron, B vitamins and zinc that are important for brain function and may protect against depression.

Experts said that when a person is deficient in various nutrients, it has negative effects on mood while increasing the risk of anxiety and stress.

He said more research is needed to confirm if nutrient deficiencies cause depression.

He said that it is also important to look at other factors such as how an individual does not feel isolated from others because of their dietary choices.
