San Francisco (Daily Pakistan Online) Geoffrey Hinton, who is often referred to as the “Godfather of AI”, has confirmed that he quit his job at Google last week to develop its artificial intelligence technology. Be able to talk openly about the ‘dangers’ they have played a role in creating.
In a statement to The New York Times, Hinton, 75, announced his resignation from Google, saying he now regrets his actions. In one of his tweets, he said that he quit his job at Google so that he could speak freely about the dangers of AI.
In a BBC interview, he said, ‘Now I can talk freely about what I think the risks might be and some of them are quite scary. As far as I can tell, the AI isn’t very intelligent, but I think it could be soon.”
Notably, Jeffrey Hinton worked for Google for over a decade and was one of the most respected voices in the field of artificial intelligence.
In 2012, working with two graduate students in Toronto, he made a major breakthrough in the field of AI. The three were able to create an algorithm that could analyze images and identify common elements, such as dogs and cars. One of the students who worked with him on the project now serves as chief scientist at OpenAI.
Geoffrey Hinton’s seminal work on neural networks also shaped artificial intelligence systems, powering many of today’s products such as ChatGPT. Speaking to the BBC, Geoffrey Hinton said that chatbots could soon surpass the level of intelligence of the human brain. Now that we see GPT4 surpassing normal human intelligence, things will progress even more quickly which is worrying.
In an interview with The Times, Hinton expressed his concerns about AI’s potential to eliminate jobs and create a world where many people “won’t know what the truth is.”
“It’s hard to see how you can stop bad guys from using it for bad things,” he added. He also expressed concern over the spread of fake images and text.
