The World Health Organization (WHO) has lifted the status of a global public health emergency for the Covid-19 pandemic after 3 years.
This announcement was made on May 5 by the international organization.
The WHO emergency committee met on May 4 to recommend ending the global emergency, following which the world body announced it on Friday.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom said during a press conference that for more than a year, the trend of reducing the severity of the Kovid epidemic was being observed.
He said that due to global vaccination and covid infection, people’s immunity against the disease has increased while the death rate has decreased and the pressure on the medical system has decreased.
He said that this trend gave most of the countries of the world an opportunity to return to the life before the epidemic of Kovid-19.
The head of the World Health Organization said that ‘in view of this, I declare that the epidemic of Kovid-19 is no longer a global emergency’.
He added that the end of the global emergency does not mean that the threat posed to global health by Covid has ended, last week the disease caused one death every 3 minutes, these are the deaths that we are aware of.
It should be noted that the WHO had declared a global emergency on January 30, 2020 since its status was maintained.
Due to this epidemic, about 7 million people died while millions of people were affected by covid.
The announcement by the World Health Organization had already eased Covid-related policies in most countries and lifted most of the restrictions that helped control the virus.
However, the official announcement by the WHO is important regarding the disease, as now other countries may relax their policies regarding the Covid epidemic.
The updated plan for the prevention of Covid was also released by the World Organization on May 3, in which countries were given instructions regarding the epidemic of Covid-19 during the next 2 years.
The aim of these guidelines was to focus now on prevention of the epidemic on a long-term basis.
