Passenger plane crashes in lake in Tanzania, death toll feared

A passenger plane crashed into a lake while trying to land at Bukuba Airport in Tanzania.

According to the authorities, the ATR-42-500 aircraft with the registration 5H-PWF of Tanzania’s private airline Precision Air was on approach to land at Bukoba Airport in Tanzania when it crashed into Lake Victoria in the area. Most of it was submerged in water.

According to officials, the body of one passenger has been recovered while 15 people have been taken to hospital.

According to local authorities, flight PW-494 had arrived in Bukoba from Dar es Salaam, according to another report, there were 43 passengers on board in addition to the crew, out of which 26 passengers have been rescued and are undergoing treatment in hospital.

Rescue operations are underway with a large number of local fishermen and volunteers taking part in the rescue work.
