Califi: The local self-proclaimed priest responsible for the deaths of 109 followers who starved to death in Kenya has appeared in court.
According to global media reports, Pastor Paul Anthing McKenzie had promised his followers heaven if they died of starvation, following which many people died.
Police recovered the bodies of 109 people from Paul’s land after which he was produced in court today where he denied all the charges. Paul faces criminal charges for the Shikahola Forest village massacre in which at least 109 members of his church were found dead.
Police officials are continuing to search for more bodies and fear that more bodies may be found near the pastor’s Good News International Church.
Kenyan security officials and the International Red Cross said the death toll was likely to rise to 200 as many people were still missing.
The Good News International Church was founded in 2003 but has been considered a cult since McKenzie was accused of encouraging followers to commit suicide over the promise of heaven.
