Jakarta: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra, killing 2 people, injuring 15 and destroying more than a dozen houses.

According to the World News Agency, an earthquake caused havoc in the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9 on the Richter scale.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 13 km in the northeastern region of Saibolga, 43 km from the island of Sumatra.

As soon as the tremors of the earthquake were felt, the residents came out of their houses and gathered in the field. Two aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 were felt during the relief operations.

15 people were injured in the earthquake, two of whom died on reaching the hospital, while the death toll is expected to increase due to the critical condition of the other four. 20 houses were also completely destroyed.

Earthquakes are common in the Indonesian island of Sumatra. In February this year, 25 people were killed and more than 450 injured in a 6.2-magnitude earthquake, while in January last year, more than 100 people were killed and 7,000 injured in an earthquake of the same magnitude. About were injured.
