Attempted protest in red zone, baton charge on PTI workers, many arrested

Police lathi-charged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf workers for protesting in Karachi’s red zone and attempting to stage a sit-in outside important government offices and detained several workers after shelling them.

According to Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf workers protested against the attack on Imran Khan at more than a dozen places last night, the police did not intervene anywhere, PTI workers also blocked the highway on Friday afternoon. When Faisal started protesting near the nursery, the police did not interfere with their democratic right.

According to the Karachi Police Chief, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf activists were planning to enter Karachi’s red zone and stage sit-ins outside important government offices, for which action was taken against them under Section 144.

According to police sources, a heavy police presence near Regent Plaza on Shahrah Faisal stopped the PTI workers and prevented them from entering the red zone. The police lathi-charged and shelled the policemen when they tried to break the barricades, several workers were detained while a large number of workers dispersed.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member Sindh Assembly Raja Azhar was slightly injured during the police baton charge and stampede on Shahrah Faisal.

According to police sources, heavy police force was deployed from all over Karachi on the information of PTI protests and dharna outside important government offices. To stop the few hundred activists of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, many times more police personnel were deployed in Shahrah Faisal, Metropole, Clifton and various other areas of the red zone. A heavy contingent of police was also deployed in Clifton on the report of dharna outside Bilawal House.
